DDA – Web site compliancy

All details on our college web site can be viewed in alternative formats to meet the needs of disabled users. For example visually impaired users may access the site using software such as speech screen readers like Zoom Text (this facility is available in Learning Support Room - Structured Study 21/22). Where images have been used we have added 'Alt' tags - text alternatives that describe the image. We have also included a text only version of the web site View this web site as TEXT ONLY. From the text only environment you can choose your viewing preferences according to your needs, for example for those with Dyslexia there is the option to change text size, background colour, text or button navigation.

As part of our on-going commitment to the DDA we have included Access Keys to the main college website:
Menu to Access Keys = Alt + 0 so users who are unable to use a mouse or pointing device can now access more speedily the main web pages.

The college prospectus and all subject leaflets are on the college web site – this means alternative versions are available to meet a variety of needs. Should you have any problems in achieving the alternative format required please contact:
Gavin Bates: e-mail g.bates@bhasvic.ac.uk or
Nicky Deakin: e-mail n.deakin@bhasvic.ac.uk in Marketing.

You can also download this information as a PDF, which you can print out. You will need Acrobat Reader to view the pages.

Download - Learning Support details

Is Learning Support of use to me?
Do you have a learning difficulty and/or disability for which you feel support would be helpful?
Do you have any learning support needs which may affect your progress at BHASVIC?
Did you have additional learning support at school and/or special arrangements (including extra time) for exams?

Who can receive Learning Support?

BHASVIC has a policy of Inclusive Education. We work with students who have recognised Learning Support needs, to give them the control to put in place the individual strategies and provisions needed to succeed at college.

Over the last few years we have worked with young people who have had physical disabilities, hearing loss, sight problems, specific learning difficulties such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, Anxiety disorders, OCD and Mental health problems. The College has particular expertise in working to support Dyslexic students.

The support programmes we offer vary according to each individual need. There is ‘in class’ support provided where appropriate, plus individual support, a quiet retreat when needed, and structured study sessions with the availability of Assistive Technology including Text to Speech software and other packages with accompanying hardware to assist effective learning.

The College also arranges for external agencies to co-operate with us in supporting our students. This might be:

  • An Educational Psychologist
  • The Brighton and Hove Service for Sensory Needs
  • The Autistc Spectrum Conditions Service

Diagnostic assessments can be arranged where appropriate. We use the services of an Educational Psychologist for these.

Diagnostic assessment is also available from a specialist teacher prior to your application for examination concessions or special arrangements, where appropriate.

We are ‘student-led’ so that you assist us in drawing up a plan of action which is fitted to match your personal requirements within the structure of learning support. We can arrange to visit your current school and you are also encouraged to come and dip into College life. We can arrange ‘Taster Sessions’ when you can find out what studying at BHASVIC is all about and enjoy a day as a College student.
