Sports Leaders learn from the best!

Integrated into the first year of the BTEC Sport & Exercise Science course, students complete the Level 2 Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA). This develops fundamental, generic leadership skills that are applied to a range of sporting situations. Following the successful completion of this, some students go on to extend their leadership capabilities further by completing the Level 3 Higher Sports Leaders Award (HSLA).

Recently, both CSL & HSL leaders spent the day with Martin Spencer, a highly experienced basketball coach. In the morning session he delivered basketball fundamentals, not only conveying the skills element of basketball, but also the coaching strategies and management qualities required to be effective. In the afternoon, the CSL & HSL leaders coached local Primary school children from Somerhill & St Joseph’s. The staff from the schools were also participating in the coaching course.
The day was a phenomenal success. With an additional 'top-up' session delivered by Anne Baverstock (Level 3 coach), all participants gained the Basketball Activators Qualification (accredited by England Basketball Association, the National Governing Body).

The primary children attending improved their basketball skills and valued the coaching by the leaders and Martin, and their smiles and enthusiasm were incredibly rewarding. This collaboration was so successful, that Anne is looking to use it as a pilot for future possibilities in other colleges delivering Sports Leaders Courses.

The CSL leaders will use this knowledge further, during a series of 3, weekly, coaching sessions with local Primary schools (held at BHASVIC), culminating in a tournament on week 4.
BHASVIC Higher Sports Leaders & Disability Sports

As a requirement of the Higher Sports Leaders course (HSL), students learn about disability sports and will complete 10 voluntary hours working with and coaching people with disabilities. As part of this module on the HSL course, we liaised with Gary Marlow (Marlow Sports) and Steve Richards (Angmerring College) to provide an introduction to disability sports and the amazing abilities of some athletes with disabilities.

4 students from Angmering, all highly competent and competing at regional if not national level on their events came to BHASVIC to teach our students about sports such as Boccia, Fencing, Athletic Throw events and Table Tennis.
They coached us with confidence and technical knowledge and encouraged our students to experience each activity. The day was brilliant and humbling and educational for all those involved.
Sport & Exercise Science Course Leadership Courses

Sport Leadership courses require students to progressively independently coach or lead activities in order to promote health and participation in physical activities. They may start by leading a micro-session (warm-up or segment of a session), before building up to leading whole activity sessions.
They complete a First Aid qualification and a National Governing Body coaching qualification throughout the courses. Both awards are nationally recognised and valued in Higher Education and the workplace as it indicates the ‘life’ skills and qualities that students posses beyond their academic qualifications, but the HSL qualification also gains 30UCAS points towards the H.E. course application process.
Both courses require students to independently complete voluntary hours in the community and the HSL specifically requires students to work with disabled and older people, an incredibly enriching and beneficial element of the course.
We are developing links with Grace Eyre Day Centre and with the Tennis Federation at a pilot college. Both awards also require students to organise an 'event' in the community, creating an opportunity for them to work collectively to liaise with external organisations and to officiate. In 2010 we hosted a ‘Mini-Olympics’ for Primary School Children as well and supporting Manor Field Primary School children for some Orienteering activities.
