BHASVIC has inherited the mantle of the former Brighton,
Hove
& Sussex Grammar School which for nearly 120 years produced
many distinguished lawyers, politicians, generals, admirals,
engineers, artists, musicians, sportsmen and teachers.
The PAST & PRESENT ASSOCIATION unites that
proud tradition with the tradition already being created
by the Sixth Form College.
Whether you have already left the College,
or are about to leave, or even if you left the Grammar School
many years ago, why not join the Association. The membership
fee is only £5 p.a. and it will help you keep in touch
with friends from either your College days or your days at
the Grammar School.
There is an annual reunion, usually a lunch
but occasionally a dinner, as well as a magazine, Past &
Present, which is published annually. There is also an annual
golf competition.
The editor of the Past & Present magazine
is Mark Gillingham, 11 Elrington Road, Hove BN3 6LG
The Membership Secretary is Bruce
Rawlings, 48 Cleveland Road, Worthing, BN13 2ES. Tel: 01903

145TH ANNUAL REUNION LUNCH
Lunch was held on Saturday 9th July 2011 in
College Hall, when 105 members, guests and three former members of staff, were
treated to a fine buffet lunch, excellently catered by the college. Preceeding
our speaker, Professor Linda Zatlin, a guest of a Past & Present member,
gave a brief summary of her current project; a revised edition of unpublished
Aubrey Beardsley letters. Professor Zatlin is Professor of English at Morehouse
College, Atlanta, Georgia.
Our speaker, Alex Brummer currently City Editor at The Daily Mail, gave us
his thoughts on the current National and International financial climate. Alex
paid tribute to John Shrewsbury, and his influence in sixth form Economics. Alex
finished his tour de force with a novel question and answer forum, widely appreciated
by all. Next year's reunion is to be announced, please join us.

Sand,
Oil & Dollars by Alan Ashmole
Alan Ashmole was born in 1931 and seemed to
be destined for a rather humdrum life as a
bank clerk. However National Service
with the RAF in the Middle East changed all
that. As a result he joined The British
Bank of the Middle East (now part of the HSBC
Group), and spent 28 years of his working life
with them in the 1950s, 60s and 70s in the
Middle East and in particular in the Arabian
(Persian) Gulf.
The general perception
of life in banking is that it is either incredibly
boring or, in recent years, incredibly money
grubbing and virtually immoral. However
life in a bank in the Middle East in those
years was none of these. |
|
|
Alan
spent a lot of his workiing life in rather
undeveloped places which are now modern centres
of industry and commerce, and frequently
spent more of his time on non banking activities
than on normal banking business. In
the course of his career he served in Beirut,
Lebanon from 1956 to 1959 while a civil war
was being waged there and at one point came
very close to being shot. At the end of the
1960s, although only the Manager of the British
Bank of the Middle East in Muscat, Oman, he
found himself virtually running the economy
of the country single handed.
Later, having left
the Bank for personal reasons, he was re-engaged
on a contract basis by the Bank on behalf of
the Sultan of Muscat and Oman to organise and
introduce a new currency into the country.
He is probably the only commercial banker ever
to have undertaken such a task.
