Charlie Jones plays Romeo in Romeo and Juliet in Florence
Press Release Monday 14th May

Charlie Jones, A Level Theatre Studies student and member of the National Youth Theatre since 2010, will be playing Romeo in the Festa Italian Theatre company’s production of Romeo and Juliet in Florence 13th – 21st July. Andrea Meadows, Head of Performing Arts at BHASVIC said “We are all very pleased and proud of Charlie’s success. This is an amazing opportunity for him. It was apparent early on in the course that Charlie was a talented actor – he is also a lovely, grounded young person who is both hard working and fun. He has a real passion for everything he does.”

Charlie’s performance of a young soldier earlier this year was extremely powerful and poignant in BHASVIC’s successful production of The Grandfathers by Rory Mullarkey (part of the 2012 National Theatre Connections competition). The Grandfathers was performed at BHASVIC and at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester.

Zach says:  “Being a Torchbearer is a huge honour. I would not have guessed this would happen to me in my wildest dreams and the enormity of it is quite daunting - but very exciting.  It means a lot to me, to know, that people think the work I do is special. I love being part of such a huge event and can’t wait to represent Brighton & Hove. (copyright Brighton & Hove City Council press office)

National Collegiate Basketball Cup
Press Release Wednesday 29th February 2012

“BHASVIC LEAP INTO FINAL FOUR”
College of West Anglia 58 BHASVIC 83

BHASVIC secured  an “on the road” quarter final victory to reach the final four stage of the tournament.

A four and a half hour bus trip initially took its toll in the first quarter, with missed jump shots and easy put backs. BHASVIC's zone defence held and they led 13-21 going into the second.

West Anglia came back strongly in the second mainly from some indifferent refereeing and foul trouble for BHASVIC and led 35-34 at the half.

In the third quarter some better outside shooting particularly from Dan Kazausk (4x3 pts) and captain Rufus Cull meant that Max Richardson had more room inside and he answered with 11 points in the quarter. A 14 point lead going into the last meant that West Anglia had to press and play catch up. This enabled easy fast break

National Collegiate Basketball Cup
points from BHASVIC, particularly from Sam Twine and Chris Currell, who eased the team out to a 20+ lead to seal the match.

Coach Dave Goss
We definitely felt the road trip early on, but eventually got our range, with some fearless shooting from Dan Kazausk. Onwards and upwards!

Scorers
Max Richardson (28) - Sam Twine (17) - Rufus Cull  (12) - Dan Kazausk (12) - Chris Currell (10) - Hugo Currell (4)

National Theatre Competition
BHASVIC students showcase talents in ‘The Grandfathers’

Press Release Wednesday 1st February 2012

The Grandfathers poster

BHASVIC (Brighton Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College) is competing with schools and colleges from across the UK in The National Theatre Connections Competition. BHASVIC hopes to be selected to take part in the National Theatre festival in London this July. A National Theatre Connections Director will attend BHASVIC’s performance of ‘The Grandfathers’ to provide advice and support on transferring the production to the Partner Theatre Festival this spring.

The Grandfathers by Rory Mullarkey follows eight young recruits as they are trained to become instruments of war. National service in the UK ended fifty years ago, but teenagers across the world are still conscripted into the armed forces. The play questions the sacrifice of young lives and aspirations for others' political miscalculations
In the midst of gunfire and explosions, teenage soldiers watch their friend die. To comfort his final moments, they recall their journey to become part of the military machinery. Reliving the moments they came to terms with stabbing a sandbag, dealt with a fledgling bird's incursion into their territory, and learnt to ignore the dark.

Andrea Meadows, Head of Performing Arts at BHASVIC said: “We have nine exceptionally talented performers, some of whom are already members of The National Youth Theatre so we are really hopeful our students could have the success of former National Youth Theatre members which include Dame Helen Mirren, Matt Lucas, Daniel Craig, Daniel Day-Lewis, Timothy Spall and Sir Derek Jacobi.”

Performances are Tuesday 21st February at 7.30pm, Wednesday 22nd February at 4.45pm and 7.30pm and Thursday 23rd February at 4.45pm and 7.30pm. Please be advised that the play does contain strong language and is suitable for audiences aged 14+.

Tickets for BHASVIC’s The Grandfathers are available from the College Cash Desk (01273-552200) and cost £5 each (£3 concessions inc BHASVIC students / staff).
