The Student Services Team is here to support
all of our students and help them achieve their goals
during their time at BHASVIC. We provide cross College
information, advice and guidance services in the following
areas to assist our students:
- Financial Support
- Travel
- Welfare
- Careers
- Mentoring
The Welfare Co-ordinator at BHASVIC offers
advice on the financial support available to our students
including:
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
EMA is a means tested payment aimed at helping full-time
learners aged 16 to 18 with the day to day costs of
attending College. Eligible learners who continue to
have good attendance can get up to £30 per
week paid directly into their bank account.
The EMA application pack is available from the Welfare
Co-ordinator or alternatively call the EMA helpline on
0800 121 8989.
Adult Learning Grant (ALG)
Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a means tested allowance
of up to £30 per week to adults aged 19 or over
studying full-time for a first full level 2 or first
full level 3 qualifications. Eligible learners must
have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the last
three years and not be in receipt of an ‘out
of work’ benefit. More information is available
from the Welfare Co-ordinator or by contacting the
ALG hotline on 0800 121 8989.
Learner Support Funds (LSF’s)
LSF’s are available to eligible learners who need
help with the cost of course materials and equipment,
text books and College trips. Learners must be on an
LSC funded course and be either in receipt of an income
based benefit or have a household income below a certain
level. More information is available from the Welfare
Co-ordinator.
Care to Learn
Learners who are under the age of 20 before they start
their course can apply for help with childcare costs
through the 'Care to Learn' scheme by calling 0800
121 8989.

Sexual Health and Well being
The College runs a weekly sexual health clinic with a
qualified nurse giving free confidential information
and advice. On a monthly basis, the College hosts the
Mobile Information Bus, staffed by qualified Youth
Workers and giving advice and guidance on such topics
as: sexual health, welfare; general well-being and
staying safe. The College also runs various events
and activities throughout the academic year linked
to National Awareness Days.
There is also a
wide range of information leaflets on a variety of
welfare topics available to be picked up in the Sports
Café.
Counselling
The College employs a qualified YAC Counsellor with whom
you can discuss your feelings, thoughts and any worries
you may have concerning such things as College work,
relationships and home life, in a confidential and
informal setting.
Careers Suite
The College has a dedicated Careers Suite where students
can access up to date information about: local full-time
and part-time job vacancies; local Colleges and national
universities & Music, Dance & Agricultural
Colleges; Careers, gap years, voluntary work and working
abroad.
Connexions PA
The College has a dedicated Connexions Personal Adviser
providing free information, advice and guidance on:
Your transition from College to higher education or
work; Planning your next steps and exploring career
ideas; Help with CV’s and filling in forms;
Interview techniques and Money matters.
Aim Higher
The College runs a comprehensive Aim Higher programme
which aims to encourage students from non-traditional
backgrounds to progress into Higher Education. The
College runs numerous visits to University Open days,
an Aim Higher Peer Mentoring scheme and gives information,
advice and guidance on possible extra funding or support
available.
The College offers several opportunities for providing
extra support for studying and guidance for progression,
through either becoming a mentor or mentee. The main
schemes the College operates are the: BHASVIC Subject
Coaching (Peer mentoring), Brighton and Hove Albion “Playing
for Success” mentoring scheme, Aimhigher Peer Mentoring
and Sussex University mentors.
