In July BHASVIC staff and students
combined with a local youth cycling club to visit
Le Tour de France for stage 15 to Mende in the mountainous
Massif Centrale. The first day after travelling saw
the party witness the duel, on the steep slopes of
the Col de Jalabert, between the Spaniard Alberto
Contador and Luxembourger Andy Schlek [eventual winner
and second place respectively]. The party, who also
took their bicycles for three days of cycling, stayed
at a ski resort at an altitude of 1500 metres on
Mont Lozere in the French department of that name.
To prepare for the steep and enduring hills, which
included 20 mile long climbs, the students took part
in training rides with local team Preston Park Youth
Cycle Club where, as well as improveing their fitness,
they were coached in how to ride efficiently and
safely in a group on the road. Despite some torrential
downpours during one of the rides all returned home
fitter and unscathed by the challenging terrain.
They even found time to swim in a local lake and
the river Tarn. All in the party agreed that they
would like to repeat the experience next year; we
await the announcement of the new Tour route in October.

Naples Trip – Philosophy
and Classical Civilisation
In July 2010 our students enjoyed trips to Pompeii,
Vesuvius, Herculaneum and Capri.

PoliticsTrip
2010 The US trip is undoubtedly
the best trip ever. We went everywhere: Statue of
Liberty, Empire State Building, a Broadway show,
the UN general assembly, the White House, the Capitol,
the Treasury. After seven days, we had exhausted
the sites, and felt at home in the country (even
if our American accents weren't quite up to scratch).
We all came back with different things: a greater
understanding of the US Congress, multiple Obama
t-shirts, a violent hatred of Fox News, a love for
the metro stop ‘Foggy
Bottom’, and a slight apprehension of American
tour guides. The only thing none of us managed to
pick up was an understanding of American money. Advice
to the next group: wear comfortable shoes, and don’t
mention who started the American Revolution!
