Student Guide to Post-Results Exams Services
Summer 2023

This guidance covers what to do if you are considering requesting:
1.    A breakdown of individual marks for each exam paper in an A Level
2.    A copy of an exam script for one or more of your exam papers
3.    A review of the marks you have been awarded for an exam paper
4.    To retake one or more A Levels in summer 2024
5.    Exam Service Flow Chart to help you find which service is right for you

If you are unsure which service is relevant to you please see the flow chart towards the bottom of this page (5. Exam Service Flow Chart to help you find which service is right for you)

Please be aware that there will be limited advice available about the on-course progress compared to exam results, or advice from subject teachers on decisions as to whether you should acquire your scripts, request a review of marking or retake exams – teachers are on annual leave at this point and will be available again from September. The college can provide general advice on all these matters at this time.

1. A breakdown of individual marks for each exam paper in an A Level
The results published on Student Advantage only show an overall grade and do not include marks for individual papers. If you have sat exams with Edexcel (Mathematics, Geography, History, English Lang.& Lit, Politics) you can access a full breakdown of your exam on the Results Plus service. You should have already set up your login using the activation code emailed to you. If you have not yet set up your account and allowed the activation code to lapse, you can request a new activation code by emailing results2023@bhasvic.ac.uk

To request a breakdown of individual exam paper results for other exam boards, for the purpose of deciding whether to proceed with a review of marking, you should complete the form linked below. These requests will be dealt with as soon as possible after Results Day, and in the order they are logged. The breakdown of individual exam paper results will be emailed to your BHASVIC email address. The college will not be able to provide a breakdown of results to you by telephone or via any other email address because we need to verify your identity.

All queries will only be dealt with via the online Helpdesk and Forms. Please be patient and understanding with any requests for information from us and do not come in person to the college to collect or query exam results (if you do, we will still ask you to submit an online request and will resolve your request in chronological order).

2. A copy of exam script for one or more of your exam papers
The purpose of this service is to enable you to see your exam paper and see where you gained scores, did well or went wrong. This is the service that is of relevance to students considering retaking an exam. It allows you to work out your revision strategy based on how you did in the exam the first time around.

Service A: Priority Copy of Script - This digital service is free from all exam boards
Digital scripts are designed to come back quickly to support reviews of marking, for university entry this Autumn.
The application deadline is 12.00 on Thursday 31st August 2023.

Service B: Non-priority Copy of Script - This digital service is free from all exam boards
This is a non-priority service, so you will receive your digital copy a few weeks after application.
The application deadline for non-priority is 12.00 on Thursday 28th September 2023

3. A reviews of marks you have been awarded for an exam

If you are considering requesting a review of marking because you are dissatisfied with your examination grade, please bear in mind the following:

  • Consider your predicted grades, ongoing assessment provided by your teacher(s), mock exam results and any advice or expectations you had about what you were realistically going to achieve. If your result is way off what you expected and how well you think the exam(s) in the subject went, then you may be right to consider a review of marking.

  • Exam boards will only change a grade due to errors, or if marking is out of tolerance when reviewing papers. Reviewers will not re-mark scripts; the service is a post results review of the original marking to ensure that the agreed mark scheme has been applied correctly. Adjustments will not be made due to minor differences in professional opinion (e.g. slightly harsh or slightly lenient marking).

  • Your marks could be lowered following the outcome of a review and your overall grade could go down.

  • Requests for a review of marking is expensive (see below).

  • The last date for receipt of A Level appeals is 12.00 on Thursday 28th September 2023 and no review of marking can be requested after this date.

The services below are available only for written papers. Coursework and practical elements cannot be reviewed and have already been checked and moderated.

This means that if you have a university place dependent on a change in grade, this service may take too long and that university place may no longer be available to you once you receive an exam board response.

The application deadline for non-priority service 2 is 12.00 on Thursday 28th September 2023.

4. Retake one or more of your A Levels in Summer 2024
If you are considering retaking an A Level to improve your results, please bear in mind the following:

  • If you wish to retake to improve your grade you will need to resit all written examination papers for that A Level; you will not be able to only retake individual exam papers

  • All practical, oral, controlled assignment or coursework component marks will be carried forward from the previous year for the qualification – you will not be able to retake these as well – we do not offer that option at BHASVIC.

  • If you are completing your studies this year and would like to retake to improve your grade for a university place, it is worth seeking advice from the college about your university options. Sometimes accepting your insurance place or exploring UCAS Clearing can help you progress this year, instead of delaying your start at university.

  • Retaking an A Level is expensive and often does not lead to an improvement in the overall grade. Consider what you would do differently or how the exams went for you in the subject you are considering You also have time to properly reflect before requesting a retake, so do not rush into any decisions.

  • You may wish to request a copy of your exam script before deciding on whether to retake. Seeing what you wrote in the actual exam can help you reflect on whether you want to retake and whether you genuinely believe you will be able to improve on what you did this summer.

  • Consider your predicted grades, ongoing assessment provided by your teacher(s), mock exam results and any advice or expectations you had about what you were realistically going to achieve. If your result is not a true reflection of what you know you are capable of, or you are confident that with a year of independent revision you can improve on your grade, then retaking is a worthwhile option.

Deadline: The deadline to request a retake for Summer 2024 is Friday 15th December 2023.

Once this deadline has passed, additional charges may apply.

Payment: Cost estimated at £200 per A level (awaiting confirmation of fees from exam boards). This will include a non- refundable £25 administration charge.

Requests will not be processed unless payment has been made via ParentPay

Exam Access Arrangements for ex-students: If you no longer attend BHASVIC and request a retake as an ex-student, and you received special access arrangements for your exams, it is likely to be the case that assessment evidence, required by the exams regulator, will have expired. You are therefore likely to need to be re-assessed by the college. Please ensure that you record the exam access arrangements you received this summer clearly on the retake application form.

5. Which exam service is the right service for me?
