Chemistry Society x ESOL Collaboration
This academic year, the BHASVIC Chemistry Society was proud to welcome ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students into its enrichment programme. The collaboration aimed to provide ESOL students with a hands-on experience of college life in an enrichment society, while fostering connections across different student communities. To ensure a safe and inclusive environment, ESOL participants began by completing the same Health and Safety training as our A Level Chemistry students, equipping them with the knowledge needed to work confidently in the lab.
Throughout the year, ESOL students took part in a range of practical chemistry sessions, supported by members of the Chemistry Society. This initiative not only gave ESOL students a chance to explore science in a new context, but also offered our A Level students a valuable opportunity to mentor and collaborate with peers from different backgrounds. Check out some of their practical sessions from earlier in the year below:
In the photo, ESOL students proudly display their certificates of participation, celebrating their achievements alongside Chemistry Society member Noa (centre), who played a key role in supporting the sessions. Also pictured is Head of ESOL, Jamal Salman (top row, far right), who helped facilitate this successful partnership. This enriching collaboration highlights the power of cross-departmental initiatives in building a more connected and inclusive college community.
