Medics update - Christmas term 2025
This term, medical tutors have been busy supporting 81 second year students with their applications. We’ve welcomed a huge variety of speakers to our weekly Medsoc events which are open to all first and second years.
Professor Rob Galloway
Our thanks to Professor Rob Galloway, who visited BHASVIC in October and delivered an uplifting and highly interactive talk 'The Art and Science of being a doctor' to an audience of 250 hopeful medics, including attendees from other local colleges and BSMS. The session offered invaluable insights into clinical decision-making, compassion and human behaviour and was a powerful blend of science, ethics, humanity and humour. Rob is an Emergency Medicine Consultant, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust; Honorary Clinical Professor, Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS), medical advisor to Brighton and Hove Albion FC, BHASVIC parent and founder of About Rare People – The Research Charity | Our Mission and Impact Please do get in touch with him if you are looking for a charity to fundraise for.

Dr Jimmy Siu
In November, we welcomed to BHASVIC Dr Jimmy Siu, Dr, Thomas Kavanagh, Dr Leonie Perera, Dr Anna Larkin, Dr Toni Sunmola, Dr Karl Arnold, Dr Adam Pickard, Dr Tanmay Jain, Dr Keri Joslyn, Dr Menreat Philips, Dr Sanj Sahota, Israa Hameed, Hadiqa Ali and Maryam Siddiqa. We can’t thank the doctors and medical students enough for giving up their time to run mock MMI interviews with the second years. The session was thoroughly enjoyed by all and students received both individual and group feedback which will be invaluable as they head off to interviews.

Dr Andy Baldwin
Our thanks also to Dr Andy Baldwin who visited BHASVIC in November and delivered an inspiring session about consent, capacity and Gillick competency. Students were able to discuss these sensitive issues around three case studies. Dr Baldwin is a GP, Medical Examiner and has edited the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialities. He is also a BHASVIC parent and happens to be the Head’s twin brother!

BSMS
We are always grateful for the support we receive from BSMS and their medical students. They visited BHASVIC on three different occasions to deliver workshops on interview preparation, medical ethics and how to get into medicine. These sessions are always interactive and give students plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

We are so lucky to have active and passionate Alumni at BHASVIC who are currently at over 30 medical schools. After helping with UCAT in the summer, this term they have been helping second years with personal statements and interview preparation. There are too many to mention but Alumni including BSMS, Kent and Medway, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Kings, Sheffield, Exeter, Hull York, Birmingham, Newcastle and Nottingham have returned to offer advice. The vets have been helped by Alumni at RVC, Nottingham, Surrey and Liverpool and the dentists from Alumni at Kings and QMUL.
Val Genuino (Alumni)
In October, Val Genuino (Alumni), returned to BHASVIC to give an engaging and thoughtful talk about the roles and responsibilities in the nursing profession. Val is really enjoying studying nursing at Brighton University.

Enya Costin (Alumni)
In November, we welcomed Enya Costin (Alumni), who is in her fifth year at BSMS. Enya’s uplifting talk on resilience and not giving up, offered hope to students with this competitive application.

Thanks to the events team who help us with all our events. We always welcome visitors to Medsoc. If you have anything medical-related that you would like to share with students, please do get in touch. s.coleman@bhasvic.ac.uk
