Enrichment opportunities in Chemistry

Competitions

We offer students in the department the opportunity to take part in national competitions. The Cambridge Chemistry Challenge is sat by year 12 students in the summer term and the Chemistry Olympiad sat by students in year 12 and year 13 in January.  We typically have 60 students participate in these events with many achieving scores placing them in the top 25% of the students in the country.

ChemStretch

A lunchtime group for students pushing for an A/A* in chemistry or for those who are intending to apply for Chemistry or a closely related discipline at University. We tackle problems beyond the specification looking to apply our knowledge to real life applications and novel problems. Most particpants in ChemStretch chose to take part competitions such as the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and the Chemistry Olympiad.

STEM Smart

Our students are supported by BHASVIC staff to participate in STEM SMART (Subject Mastery and Attainment Raising Tuition) which is a widening participation initiative from the University of Cambridge, in association with Isaac Physics, to provide free complementary teaching and support to UK (non-fee paying) students who:

  • have either experienced educational disadvantage or belong to a group that is statistically less likely to progress to higher education and
  • are considering applying to Engineering or Physical Science (eg Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Materials Science) courses at university and are studying A levels (or equivalent) in maths and science.
