Medics updates

Lots of activity and updates from our Medsoc students over the last term...

We've had lots of visitors! Sophie Creamer, an ex BHASVIC student, visited Medsoc and gave an insightful talk about life in her final year of medicine at Edinburgh University. She gave us lots of tips for interviews and how to make a successful application to medical school. We're really pleased that currently over three quarters of the second years applying for medicine have secured at least one interview (interviews still coming in until May).

Rosie Lane, from Wilbury vets in Hove, visited Medsoc and shared lots of useful tips with the veterinary students on additional questionnaires and how to be successful in interviews. We're really pleased that currently over three quarters of second year vets have secured at least one offer to study veterinary medicine so far this year (offers still coming in until May)

Twelve first year medics and dentists travelled up to London to hear England's chief medical officer, Sir Chris Whitty, deliver his second lecture in the medicine after disasters series. He spoke about medicine after earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis and there was a chance to ask him questions.

BSMS are frequent visitors to BHASVIC and the talk for first years after college on how to get into medicine was well attended. These talks are always interactive and there is the opportunity to ask lots of questions.

Mollie Macconnell, one of our second years, offered to present her EPQ research at Medsoc on the links between psychology and medicine. Even more remarkable was that she offered to do this during mock week.

This term Medsoc sessions will focus on UCAT (admissions test), wider reading, widening participation and whether the medical futures pathway is right for you. All details are posted on the Medsoc channel weekly.

Finally, we're pleased to announce a new portfolio course for students wishing to pursue an application for medicine, dentistry or veterinary 'Medics Plus' will enable us to look in more depth at hot topics, current affairs, data, trends and ethical issues. This is a great option for any first year wishing to put in a university application for these three competitive careers.
