BHASVIC Commended for Climate Education

Over the last years BHASVIC has developed award-winning collaborative practice, leadership and advocacy around sustainability, climate education and climate justice. These themes are embedded in our college identity, ethos and practice; supporting staff, curriculum development and student voice as we progress towards our NetZero targets and along the Association of Colleges (AOC) Climate Action Roadmap. All members of our community engage with collaborative and innovative opportunities around these key issues.

In 2021/22, we developed and led the education for sustainable development strand of Greener Sussex, a Department for Education skills Development Fund partnership project alongside our FESussex partners (Bexhill College, Chichester College Group, Collyer’s College, East Sussex College Group, GBMet, Plumpton College and Varndean College), comprising teaching and learning, resource development, training and employer engagement and progressed our AOC Climate Action Roadmap journeys. As part of this wider project we developed and led the Education for Sustainable Development / Carbon Literacy workstrand - the only activity to involve all eight colleges, providing a vital underpinning of knowledge for all other workstrands, testing a flexible and innovative model of short course, curriculum development, training and employer-engagement. Our Carbon Literacy Award, available to all students and staff, is a central part of the education and enrichment of our community.

We are delighted to have been Commended for the Association of Colleges Education for Sustainable Development Beacon Award whilst highlighting this is representative of the collaborative work with our FESussex partners above. As with all sustainability and climate change initiatives, meaningful change is only possible where we work together to be more than the sum of our parts.
